With the dangerous conditions, the New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to announced on Twitter that “If conditions are not safe on Wednesday for Trick or Treating, I will sign an Executive Order rescheduling Halloween.” Manhattan’s annual Village Halloween Parade has been called off. For the first time in 39 years the parade has been cancelled by the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management and the New York Police Department. The organizers of the parade stated on the official parade website, “We hope that everyone who would have come to the parade is safe, and that those who can volunteer to help out at one of the Emergency Outreach Centers near you.”
Unfortunately, New Jersey and New York were not the only states that had to reschedule Halloween. According to CNN, In Beckley, West Virgina, there was so much snowfall in the last 24 hours that trick or treating had to be cancelled. Due to horrible conditions, trick or treating, the children’s candy filled holiday has been cancelled once again. However, states are not the only ones cancelling Halloween. Due to these harsh conditions, famous celebrity Heidi Klum’s cancelled her annual Halloween bash in Manhattan. The famous supermodel and Project Runway host tweeted, “Hope you & your loved ones are safe after the storm. Canceling my Halloween party…postponing to a haunted Christmas.”
Safety is the main concern for many organizations, the government and people that are in the current path of Sandy. Halloween is supposed to be a fun filled holiday for kids to choose a costume and gather candy from door to door. However, this year’s Halloween has been twisted and turned from “trick or treat” to “stay in and eat”.
